Dieudonné Nizigiymana is from Rubirizi Hill. At 46, he is the father of 6 children, and 4 of them are studying.
This year, 52 farmers from Rubirizi joined Dieudonné as one of the Rubirizi Hill partner farmers that delivers cherries to a Long Miles washing station.
His family depends on agriculture and livestock. Along with his wife, they grow many crops like maize, beans, potatoes, cassava, peas, beans, sweet potatoes, and of course, coffee.
These crops provide them food and income, coffee being the main source. Dieudonné began growing coffee when he was 14 years old. At that time, he was helping his parents on their coffee plantation.
In the early days of growing his own coffee, he began with a small plot of land gifted by his parents, containing just 80 coffee trees. Now, he has 1,200 trees across 4 coffee plantations.
There are many challenges that he, along with other farmers, face such as diseases to the trees, and lack of mulch and fertilizer. He currently has 1 pig that provides fertilizer, but it’s not enough for all of his trees.
Dieudonné says that even though being a coffee farmer can be difficult, he has plans to continue to plant more trees because coffee provides for him and the future of his children.
