Meet Tryphosa Izigiyimana. She lives at Musumba Hill, where she also grows coffee. At 60 years old, she is a mother of 6 girls.
This year, 60 farmers from Musumba joined Tryphosa as one of the Musumba Hill partner farmers that delivers cherries to an LMC washing station.
Tryphosa is a widow. Her husband was killed during the 1993 war in Burundi after her children were born. In Burundi, it’s difficult culturally to not have a male in the family. But Tryphosa knew that it was equally frowned upon to remarry.
That didn’t stop Tryphosa from giving her girls the best life possible. Her husband left behind two coffee plantations with over 300 trees. The thing was, Tryphosa had no clue how to care for the trees.
Tryphosa and her girls learned everything they could about coffee, as they saw it as their only chance to survive from the income coffee brings. In 1998, they started to nurture the coffee plantation again.
Her two daughters have now completed University and one is about to graduate.
Tryphosa is joyous about the peace in Burundi now. She says that children are completing schools because of peace, and farmers have washing stations to bring their cherries to because of peace. She says that peace is something she will always pray for.
Tryphosa now owns 120 coffee trees as her family took some on. She no longer has school fees to pay for and will go on to buy her own coffee plantation.
