This is Jovite Nahimana, a coffee farmer from Gaharo Hill.
This year, 33 new farmers from Gaharo joined Jovite as one of the Gaharo Hill partner farmers that delivers cherries to an LMC washing station.
Jovite is 56 years old and has 8 children with her late husband, Astère Hatungimana, who passed away in 2020 from malaria. Astère was in charge of taking care of the coffee, the children and Jovite helping him pick cherries during the harvest. Since his passing, Jovite has taken over all 3,210 coffee trees across 5 plantations.
Jovite’s family has always relied on agriculture for food and income. She grows beans, maize, sweet potatoes, cassava, potatoes, and coffee. She feels connected to coffee now, not only because it is a source of income for her family, but also because it was something that was very important to her husband.
Astère lives on throughout the coffee trees, and Jovite honors him through her great care of their trees.
